About Me

Hey there!  Welcome to the Big White Farmhouse.

I'm Ashley, a wife and mother to six little ones, ages 12-2.  Like most, I began blogging in 2011 as a way to share photos of my growing family to far-away relatives.  However, through the years, this space has grown into a place to record my adventure into intentional living.  A quote I love is from Diane Ackerman:
I don't want to get to the end of my life and find that I lived just the length of it.  I want to have lived the width of it as well.
This is what I think of when I imagine an intentional life.  A life not filled with more things, but filled with the best things.  A life filled with more memories than material goods.  A life filled with laughter and good food with the ones I love most.

What you'll find here at the Big White Farmhouse

2017 was an exciting year for our family: we moved to our dream house on five acres in the country!  And as transitions do, this change overflowed into other areas of my life as well, including the blog.  Inspired by Psalm 90:12 (which says, Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.), I switched to a numbering system for my posts.  For me, they represent an intentional way of noticing the ordinary extraordinary of my little life.

Goal Setting // Like you, I juggle a lot in my different roles as wife, mother, educator, sister, daughter and friend.  My twice-monthly intention lists help me see all of these tasks in one spot and keep me accountable to check them off the list.  They're also helpful in carving out time for self care - so important!

Book Reports // I am a voracious reader and am raising the next generation to be too!  Although it often takes different forms (check out the "What We're Reading" series or my "Book Report" series), books are a big topic here.  I always love to hear what's on your nightstand too!

House to Home // We moved into our new house in June 2017 and are slowly making it feel like home.  I love home improvement projects and decorating and occasionally share updates.

Homeschooling // We are a homeschooling family and have kids in Seventh, Fifth, Third, First and Pre-Kindergarten.  I share highlights and photos most Fridays during the school year.

Gratitude // I'm naturally a pretty pessimistic person (especially compared to my eternal optimist of a husband), but nothing improves my mood faster than reflecting on gratitude.  I share a long list of things I love most months to challenge myself to see how blessed I am.  I hope it will inspire you to look at your life with fresh eyes too!

Health and Fitness // Running is my go-to exercise.  I'm convinced it is the perfect exercise for introverts and I am a better wife and mother because of it.  I have also recently dipped my toes into cleaner living.  Change can be overwhelming, so my motto is "New habits, little by little."  No matter how small, steps in the right direction can lead to a big impact.

Our Debt Free Journey // In June 2018, we became "gazelle intense" with our debt reduction plans.  To keep motivation high, I often share things that we're using, trying or helping us on the adventure to financial freedom.  Let me know if you're in the same boat, so I can cheer you on!

Monthly Dinner Plans // Inspired by Dinner: A Love Story, I've been keeping a record of our dinners since July 2017.  It's a fun way to combine memory keeping with food.  I hope it helps with your dinner ruts too. (This series was retired in June 2019.)
